During this period many sporting and cultural organisations fostered a sense of community in the area, e.g., the GAA with football and camogie teams, farming organisations, Pipe Band, South Union Hunt, point-to-points and drag hunting etc. were to the forefront in this development. Athletics was very strong and the greatest sports hero we have had is Joe West, who was selected for the Irish Team in the marathon at the Olympics Games in Helsinki in 1952.
